You may be referred to a periodontist by your general dentist or hygienist if they notice signs of gum disease during a routine exam. However, a referral isn’t required—you’re always welcome to schedule a consultation directly if you have concerns about your gum health.
Early evaluation and treatment can prevent more serious issues later. You should consider seeing a periodontist if you notice any of the following:
- Bleeding gums when brushing, flossing, or eating
- Persistent bad breath.
- Receding gums or loose teeth
- Changes in bite or tooth spacing
The lining inside your mouth should normally appear smooth and coral pink. Any change in color, texture, or sensation could be a sign of a problem that needs attention, including oral cancer. Watch for these warning signs:
- Red or white patches (erythroplakia or leukoplakia)
- A sore that doesn’t heal or bleeds easily
- A lump or thickened area in the mouth
- Persistent sore throat or hoarseness
- Difficulty chewing or swallowing

Pain isn’t always present—even serious conditions like oral cancer can develop without discomfort. Perform a monthly self-check and schedule an evaluation if you notice any changes.
Remember: Your mouth is one of your body’s earliest warning systems. If you’ve noticed any changes—like bleeding gums, gum recession, or persistent bad breath—or if your dentist has mentioned signs of gum disease, it’s a good time to schedule a consultation.
Even if you’re unsure, a periodontal evaluation can help you understand your gum health and create a plan for long-term care.
