Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, exposing the tooth roots. This can lead to sensitivity, an uneven appearance, and a loss of natural protection against bacteria and trauma. Over time, exposed roots can become more vulnerable to decay and further recession.

When recession is significant, a root coverage procedure—commonly called a gum graft—can restore healthy gum tissue, protect your teeth, and cover the exposed root.

Why Treatment May Be Needed

  • Reduces sensitivity to hot, cold, or touch
  • Protects roots from decay and erosion
  • Improves appearance of your smile
  • Prevents further recession and strengthens natural defenses

How It Works

Drs. Barack and Gupta gently place a thin layer of tissue—from another area of your mouth*—over the recessed region. This tissue integrates with your existing gum, creating a strong, stable band of attached tissue that can cover exposed roots and restore a healthy gumline.

*Sometimes, an alternative material such as a collagen matrix or tissue allograft may be used in lieu of your own tissue.

What to Expect

The procedure is performed with local anesthesia for comfort and has a highly predictable success rate. Most patients experience only mild soreness and return to normal activities within a few days. You’ll receive personalized aftercare instructions to support healing and long-term results.
