When gum disease develops, bacteria and tartar can build up beneath the gum line—where regular brushing and flossing can’t reach. Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) is a gentle, non-surgical treatment that cleans these deeper areas, helping your gums heal and preventing further damage.

This “deep cleaning” is often the first step in treating periodontal disease and restoring gum health.

What to Expect

Before treatment, the team will perform a thorough exam, which may include X-rays, to check gum health and measure pocket depths. Based on your results, SRP may be recommended for one or more areas of your mouth.

  • During the Procedure:
  • Scaling removes plaque and hardened tartar from the tooth surfaces, especially below the gum line.
  • Root planing smooths the tooth roots, helping gums reattach and making it harder for bacteria to collect again.
  • A local anesthetic will be used to keep you comfortable, and antimicrobial rinses or medications may be applied to support healing.

Benefits of Treatment

  • Stops progression of gum disease by removing the bacteria that causes inflammation.
  • Helps gums heal and tighten around teeth.
  • Prevents tooth loss by reducing pocket depths and helping to prevent bone loss.
  • Improves overall health — gum disease bacteria are linked to heart and metabolic conditions.
  • Fresher breath and a cleaner feel — removing buildup also reduces odor and surface stains.

After Care & Next Steps

Following SRP, you may be placed on a Supportive Periodontal Therapy (SPT) schedule with our hygienists—routine maintenance visits every 3–4 months to help keep your gums healthy and prevent recurrence.
