If your dentist recently said you need scaling and root planing, you might feel a little nervous. The name sounds aggressive, like someone is going to scrape your teeth with heavy tools.

But scaling and root planing is simply a deep cleaning. It’s a nonsurgical procedure that removes bacteria and tartar from below your gumline, and it’s one of the most effective ways to stop gum disease in its tracks. At Old Orchard Periodontics & Implant Dentistry, Dr. Barack and Dr. Gupta perform this treatment every day to help patients keep their natural teeth.

Scaling and Root Planing: What to Expect in Skokie, IL

Why Can’t a Regular Cleaning Fix This?

A regular dental cleaning focuses on what’s above your gums. Your hygienist scrapes away plaque and tartar from the visible surfaces of your teeth and polishes them up.

Scaling and root planing goes deeper. It cleans the pockets between your gums and teeth where bacteria hide and multiply. Once gum disease develops, those pockets become too deep for a standard cleaning to reach. Regular cleanings maintain health; deep cleaning restores it.

What Actually Happens During the Procedure?

The treatment happens in two parts: scaling and root planing.

Scaling comes first. Dr. Barack or Dr. Gupta will use specialized instruments to remove plaque and tartar from below your gumline. This includes the tooth surface and the walls of the periodontal pockets. They may use hand tools or an ultrasonic device that vibrates to break up deposits while spraying water to wash them away.

Root planing follows. This step smooths out the root surfaces of your teeth. Those rough spots give bacteria a place to cling to, so smoothing them makes it harder for bacteria to reattach. It also helps your gums reattach more firmly to your teeth.

Does It Hurt? Here’s What You’ll Actually Feel

This is the question every patient asks. The answer is no, you won’t feel pain during the procedure.

Dr. Barack and Dr. Gupta use local anesthesia to numb your gums completely before they start. You’ll feel pressure and vibration, but not sharp discomfort. Many patients compare it to having a filling done.

After the numbing wears off, you may have some soreness or sensitivity for a few days. Your gums might feel tender, and your teeth could be more sensitive to hot or cold temperatures. That’s normal and usually fades within a week.

How Long Does It Take and How Many Visits?

Scaling and root planing is rarely done in one appointment. Most patients need two to four visits, with each visit focusing on one quadrant or half of the mouth.

Each session typically lasts about an hour. The reason for spreading it out is simple: numbing a whole mouth at once is uncomfortable, and the procedure is detailed work that takes time to do well.

What Happens After Treatment? Recovery and Follow-Up

Your gums will need time to heal after deep cleaning. You can expect some mild swelling, slight bleeding when you brush, and tooth sensitivity for a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers usually handle any discomfort.

During the first week, you’ll want to stick with soft foods and avoid anything very hot or cold. You should continue brushing and flossing, but be gentle around the treated areas. Dr. Barack and Dr. Gupta will give you specific aftercare instructions tailored to your situation.

About four to six weeks later, you’ll come back for a follow-up visit. They’ll measure your gum pockets again to see how much they’ve shrunk. Successful treatment means pockets become shallower, bleeding decreases, and your gums look healthier.

Does This Cure Gum Disease?

Scaling and root planing stops the disease from getting worse. It removes the bacteria that causes the infection and gives your gums a chance to heal.

But gum disease is chronic, meaning it requires ongoing maintenance. After your deep cleaning, you’ll need to come in for more frequent cleanings, usually every three to four months instead of every six. Those maintenance visits help keep the disease from coming back.
