Crown lengthening is a minor periodontal surgical procedure that reshapes the gum and supporting bone around a tooth to expose more of its surface.

Why Would I Need Crown Lengthening?

Restorative Needs: When a tooth needs a crown or filling but too much of it is hidden below the gum line, crown lengthening exposes more tooth structure for a secure, lasting fit.

Cosmetic Improvement: For patients with a “gummy smile,” the procedure can create a more balanced, natural-looking gumline by revealing more of each tooth.

Health & Maintenance: Reshaping the gums allows for better cleaning around restorations, reducing the risk of future decay or gum disease.

How It Works

Drs. Barack and Gupta gently recontour the gum tissue—and, if necessary, a small amount of bone—around the affected tooth or teeth. This creates a new, healthy gum-to-tooth relationship and exposes the necessary portion of the tooth.

The procedure is performed comfortably under local anesthesia and typically takes about one hour, depending on how many teeth are involved. Afterward, sutures are placed to support healing.

Recovery & Results

You’ll notice a difference right away—your teeth will appear longer and more even. Mild sensitivity or discomfort is normal for a few days, and most patients return to normal routines quickly. Follow-up visits ensure proper healing, which is usually complete within 2–3 months.
